Lynnwood Selects New Finance Director

SonjaMayor Nicola Smith is pleased to announce her appointment of Sonja Springer as the new City of Lynnwood Finance Director. On Monday, June 1, 2015, the Lynnwood City Council approved Mayor Smith's appointment of Sonja Springer to serve as the City of Lynnwood's new Finance Director and oversee the Administrative Services Department.

The City of Lynnwood enlisted the Prothman Company to conduct an executive search this January which resulted in a pool of well qualified candidates. "Sonja has the leadership, technical skills, and stability that the city truly needs right now," said Mayor Nicola Smith. "She'll step right in and become a great leader to the Administrative Services team and a great partner to my leadership team who are creating a strategic and sustainable long-range plan to move our city forward to a great future."

Sonja is looking forward to assisting the City of Lynnwood with completing the implementation of its new financial management system, which is the same system she implemented at the City of Mountlake Terrace a few years ago. Sonja is excited to lead the Finance team and assist them with submitting the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to the Government Finance Officer's Association (GFOA). She has assisted the city of Mountlake Terrace with consistently receiving this award for the past eight years. Sonja plans to update and implement a six-year Financial Forecast at the City of Lynnwood, which will help the Mayor and Council with critical decisions that affect the future financial stability of the City.
Sonja is a Certified Public Accountant and a graduate of the University of Washington. She lives in Edmonds with her husband, Shawn and their two sons, Alex and Tristan. Alex, who was on the Edmonds City Council as the Student Representative in 2011-2012, will be a senior in Mechanical Engineering at MIT in Boston this Fall. Tristan will be a sophomore this Fall at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota where he is pursuing an Economics degree while also a key player on the college soccer team.

The City of Lynnwood has been without a permanent Finance Director since November, when Lorenzo Hines stepped down to take an Assistant City Administrator position with the city of Pacifica, CA.
