Environmental and Surface Water Management

The Environmental & Surface Water team works hard to keep Lynnwood's environment green and clean. Check out our programs and initiatives below to see what we're up to, and learn about ways to get involved!

1. Overview

We have some great educational opportunities for people of all ages. Whether you want a rain garden on your property or would like to volunteer you are in the right spot.

2. Education Opportunities

Students learning about salmon

Calling all Lynnwood K-12 educators! We have some great ways to teach students about salmon, water quality, and how our actions on land affect our salmon, orcas, and other downstream wildlife.

Salmon in the classroom

Raise salmon in your own classroom! Receive fertilized Coho salmon eggs and raise them until they are ready to be released into the wild. Visit our hatchery for a field trip to release your own fish and see the process at a larger scale. Classroom presentations are also available.

Salmon release field trip

Can’t raise your own fish in the classroom? Don’t worry, the city has plenty of fish for your students to release! Visit the city of Lynnwood’s hatchery and environmental education center to learn about water quality, native plants, the salmon life cycle, and get a chance to release a salmon into the wild!

Classroom presentations

The City of Lynnwood partners with Nature Vision to offer a wide range of programs including nature in the classroom, habitat connections, and watershed programs.

Contact Cameron Coronado for more information at ccoronado@LynnwoodWA.gov, 425-670-5245.

3. Spill Kit Outreach

The City of Lynnwood provides outreach about the dangers and damages of spills.

Spills include anything besides rain that could be bad for our water quality.

This includes:

  • Paint
  • Oil
  • Soap
  • Garbage

If you see a spill, call 425-670-KRUD(5783) or you can

Report a Spill Online

For more information contact Cameron Coronado at ccoronado@LynnwoodWA.gov or 425-670-5245

4. Rain Gardens

The City of Lynnwood has partnered with the Snohomish Conservation District to bring rain gardens to Lynnwood.

This partnership allows us to bring rain gardens to Lynnwood at very little cost to homeowners.

Benefits of rain gardens:

  • Lowers risk of flooding
  • Filters water runoff
  • Provides habitat
  • Protects salmon and wildlife

Would you like a rain garden at your home, business, school, community center, or place of worship?

Contact Cameron Coronado at 425-670-5245 or ccoronado@LynnwoodWA.gov for more information.

5. Environmental Volunteer Opportunities

Storm Drain Marking

Do you know where storm drains lead? Many people think storm drains carry water to a local sewer plant to be treated. In fact, this water flows right into local waterways. This direct flow of untreated water is the leading cause of pollution in the Puget Sound area.

To educate the public, the City is labeling storm drains that tell you where this water goes. You can help us with this effort!

Contact Cameron Coronado to volunteer to install storm drain markers around Lynnwood at ccoronado@LynnwoodWA.gov or 425-670-5245.

  • Spreading wood chips
  • And more!
