2025 City Council Proclamations

Each year the Lynnwood City Council puts together a schedule or list of official proclamations, declarations, or observances that recognize specific days, weeks, or months dedicated to particular causes, events, or groups, such as national holidays, awareness months, or significant historical anniversaries. Throughout the year these proclamations are read aloud at Council meetings and community members, leaders, and/or organizations are recognized and invited to accept the proclamation for their work in creating a welcoming community.

	WHY DO WE USE PROCLAMATIONS?
	Raising Awareness: Proclamations often bring attention to significant issues, causes, or events. By designating a day, week, or month to a particular cause (e.g., Mental Health Awareness Month), they help to educate the public and increase awareness on topics that may need more visibility.
	Acknowledging Contributions: Proclamations can recognize and honor the contributions of specific groups, individuals, or professions. For example, a proclamation might declare a day to honor teachers, veterans, or volunteers, acknowledging their valuable roles in society.
	Promoting Unity: Proclamations often serve to unite communities and the broader public around shared values, celebrations, or important causes. For instance, a proclamation for Independence Day encourages national pride and reflection on a country’s history.
	Encouraging Action: By officially recognizing certain issues or events, proclamations can inspire individuals, organizations, and communities to take action, whether through participation in events, supporting causes, or advocating for change.
	Cultural/ Historical Significance: Proclamations can preserve and promote cultural heritage and historical memory. They ensure that important events or traditions are remembered and passed down through generations. For example, the City does a proclamation for Juneteenth to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.
