South Lynnwood Urban Forestry & Community Stewardship Program

Project Overview

In September 2023, Lynnwood was awarded a prestigious Urban and Community Forestry Grant from the USDA Forest Service. Lynnwood's award of $1.3 million was one of 400 projects receiving investment from the Inflation Reduction Act and the Justice40 Initiative. 

Lynnwood's project aims to protect urban forests, riparian areas, and wetlands to expand healthy urban tree canopy within the South Lynnwood Neighborhood. in addition to environmental restoration and tree canopy enhancement projects, this project will include a robust stewardship program with an intensive outreach and education component for residents.

Funding to restore 12-acres of wetland and woodland in Lynnwood’s South Lynnwood neighborhood and to develop a community stewardship program as been provided by the USDA Forest Service. 

The USDA Forest Service has awarded the City of Lynnwood $1.3 million dollars from the Inflation Reduction Act supporting the goals of the Urban and Community Forest Program

A grant agreement is expected to be signed in May 2024 and will mark the start of this 5-year grant and program.

To file a program discrimination complaint, a complainant should complete a Form AD-3027, USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form, which can be obtained online at www.ocio.usda.gov/document/ad-3027, from any USDA office, by calling (866) 632-9992, or by writing a letter addressed to USDA. The letter must contain the complainant’s name, address, telephone number, and a written description of the alleged discriminatory action in sufficient detail to inform the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights (ASCR) about the nature and date of an alleged civil rights violation. The completed AD-3027 form or letter must be submitted to USDA by:

This program includes developing a community stewardship program and enhancing the number of trees and tree canopy in South Lynnwood. Project elements will include: 

  • Monthly forest stewardship events
  • Classroom fieldtrips
  • Tree Giveaways
  • Community member enrollment in a Native Plant Steward program
  • Partnership with Edmonds College Service Learning Program
  • Partnership with the Snohomish Tribe of Indians
