Edmonds man arrested for lighting suspicious device underneath police vehicle in LPD parking lot

LYNNWOOD, WA (April 20, 2020) - Just after 10 p.m. Sunday a witness reported seeing a man bent down near a police vehicle in the Lynnwood Police Department parking lot.  The witness told 911 dispatchers the man appeared to light a fire underneath the truck and then get into a black BMW sedan.

When officers attempted to contact the man, he drove off.  One of the responding sergeants pursued; the suspect was driving erratically and attempting to swerve into the sergeant's vehicle.  The sergeant successfully performed a pursuit intervention technique on the 196th St SW overpass, forcing the BMW to a stop.  The driver was uninjured, was immediately arrested, and the vehicle was towed for evidence.

The Washington State Patrol Joint Bomb Squad responded to the police department to identify the incendiary device that was under the pickup; the device was heavily burned.  They used a robot to inspect what was left of the device and determined there was no further issue.  The bomb technician noted it appeared to be a burrito or similar food item wrapped in foil and affixed with a homemade fusing.

The suspect, a 30-year-old Edmonds man, is facing 2nd degree arson and attempt to elude charges.
