School Safety Program: Lynndale Elementary Neighborhood

School Safety Lynndale Neighborhood Map

The City of Lynnwood is working to improve conditions for people walking and biking to Lynndale Elementary School and other neighborhood destinations.

As part of the Connect Lynnwood study, the City ran a citywide survey on walking and biking, which found that half of school trips were made by driving and a quarter are made by walking and biking. More than half of respondents were uncomfortable or very uncomfortable with the idea of their student(s) walking or biking to school. The main barriers cited were lack of sidewalks, difficult crossings, and busy streets with high speeds.

WALK AUDIT - In October 2019, the City conducted a walk audit and solicited feedback from school administrators and staff. The map below summarizes findings from Lynndale Elementary.

The City is considering a wide range of potential measures to make neighborhood streets safer and more comfortable for people walking, biking, and rolling. Potential Improvement include:

  • Traffic Calming, such as speed humps or pinch points to reduce vehicle speeds and cut-through traffic on local streets.
  • Pedestrian Walkways to provide a dedicated space for people to walk and roll along local streets. They can be more cost-effective than a traditional raised concrete sidewalk and have fewer impacts to adjacent properties.
  • Crossing Enhancements such as crosswalk markings and signage to increase yielding and make it safer and easier to cross the street.
  • Median Crossing Islands to create a safe place for people to stop while crossing the street, allowing them to cross in two stages. Refuge islands are especially useful at locations without a traffic signal.
