"SQUIRREL WITH A PEARL EARRING" by Kelly Lyles
Kelly Lyles
Artist Statement: Life (beside politics) is lots of fun, I hope viewers will share that in my work.
I’m an artist (known equally for painting, Artcars, colourful clothing, and networking for the arts) with various styles/media, all based on representational art steeped in years of classical training. There’s usually an element of humour, especially in these trying times we need laughter!
I love verbiage; physical representation of vocabulary, scale and juxtaposition of disparate subjects. Therefor created 25 animal-themed visual puns using household items (SPAMSTER, CHOCOLATE CHIP-MUNKS, CAT-SUP, MARMOTLADE, CHERRIES GERBILEE), light-hearted subliminal messages of Americana and consumerism with rhyming familiar products.
Another of my series references puns with artist’s names (RUBEN’S REUBEN - sandwich/dill pickle-, KLEE-NEX, FRIDA’S CORN CHIPS, etc). Lately I've continued the wordplay working 3D, painting on 'found objects' packaging (NUTRIA BARS, POP-TARTS, MICE-A-RONI boxes).
Bon Appetit!!
Biography: I've had an exciting life, growing up all over the world thanks to a father in the International division of 3M company. I continue to travel regularly, and have been in charge of 5 International art delegations in the last 5 years, forging alliances in China, Eastern Europe, Cuba, and the last was to South Africa for the Cape Town Art Fair.
I'm also involved in the ARTCAR movement. We decorate and embellish (painting, sculpting and sometimes welding) our vehicles, so they are rolling canvases of the ultimate 'public art'. My Leopard Bernstein (named after the famous Composer) has been featured in film, television, magazines, newspapers and books. Currently I drive the EXCESSORIES ODD-YSSEY, a Honda Van covered with women's fashion accessories (jewelry, purses, shoes, belts, sunglasses and more) and a magnetic paper-doll of myself on the hood (with various interchangeable outfits from my own closet). We go on artcar caravans, traveling en masse (with frequent stops at outsider-art installations) to appear in parades and exhibits around the U.S.
My studio, home & Artcars have been featured in innumerable television shows and magazine/newspaper articles. A bibliography would include Harrod Blank'’s 2 ‘Artcars’ books and his '09 documentary, AUTOMORPHOSIS. Publications include Wierd Washington book. National Television (Travel channel, Discovery, Odyssey Network, HGTV), International (Canada's Weird Wheels) & local television (NW Afternoon, Evening Magazine), local news, local, national and International radio, local, national (NY Times) and world newspapers (South African, Italian) and magazines (Woman’s World, National Geographic Kids, etc).
"Heat Birth" by Chandra Wu
Chandra Wu
Artist Statement: An appreciation of this dynamic planet inspires a lot of the patterns and layers in my textile work. I have been exploring the repetitive patterns of quilts and engineering their construction in a manner that I see as naturally linked to my foundational knowledge in physics and earth science. I have always enjoyed recognizing patterns in both natural and manmade processes and many of my abstract works are inspired by natural science or engineering motifs. I incorporate the movement of tectonic surface disruption into abstract quilts. They are often like landscapes, drawing the eye to repeating patterns and inviting the viewer to puzzle over the repetitions and variations. The weathering effects from using repurposed or mended cloth reinforce the connection between human and geologic timescales. I make my art from an intimate, multi-generational experience with needlework that I associate with somatic healing, spiritual connection with my ancestors, and contemplation of the ephemeral and utilitarian nature of cloth.
Biography: Chandra Wu completed a residency at Glen Arbor Arts Center in Michigan in 2025 and the Shoreline Saltwater Park in 2022. She has shown work at the Schweinfurth Art Center, the Carnegie Museum, Bainbridge Island Art Museum and the Pacific Northwest Quilt and Fiber Art Festival and currently has 2 quilts at the Kent Summer Art Exhibition. She introduces integrated needle arts to students of all ages through various community and public school programs and holds a MA in English as a Second Language. She is a founding member of the Seattle Modern Quilt Guild and currently serves as a board member on the Pacific Northwest Quilt and Fiber Art Museum in La Conner, WA.
