Artist Statement: In my art, I explore the nuances of color in natural things by articulating them with unnaturally vibrant colors, in varying degrees of blatancy. Pushing the boundary of realism for the sake of beauty and loud expression for the sake of storytelling is endlessly interesting to me, thus my pieces exhibit a variety of realism and nonrealism. I want to make both beautiful art that’s only nice to look at, as well as art the beauty of which is found in how it makes you consider, upended on you with no distinct story but that still prompts you to wonder.

That’s what I strive to make more intentional in my art: the weird and unexpected with a refined, eloquent delivery.

Biography: Evelyn Wu is a 9th grader at Shorewood High School and for roughly 4 years has been using colored pencils to draw landscapes and flowers. A little over a year ago she began learning oil painting with her uncomprehensive experience in acrylic paint. Now oil paint is the medium she works with the most, besides digital art (using Clip Studio Paint) and ink (using the margins of her schoolwork). She is inspired by music, photography, and the people around her. She spends her time napping, baking, and reading.
