10-Minute Walk

10-Minutes Walk Campaign Logo
What is the campaign?

A nationwide movement to ensure there's a great park within a 10-Minute Walk of every person, in every neighborhood, in every city across America.

How are we contributing?

Mayor Nicola Smith has joined over 200 mayors across the country in pledging to increase access to Lynnwood's parks for all residents.  The City is working towards increasing access to each and every park in Lynnwood.

Why does this matter?

Studies show that parks are essential to the physical, social, environmental and economic health of a community!

Lynnwood's Park Access Plan: Improving Access to Neighborhood Parks

Background

In 2018, the City applied for funding to support local planning efforts for the 10-Minute Walk Campaign to increase access to high-quality parks.

In the second round of grants, Lynnwood was one of 10 cities that received $40,000 each to work alongside the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), The Trust for Public Land (TPL), and the Urban Land Institute (ULI) to develop a more effective and measurable commitment to the 10-Minute Walk Campaign.

Lynnwood’s grant proposal was specifically to examine current park access barriers, develop a Park Access Plan addressing removal of barriers and incorporate the Park Access Plan into the City’s concurrent effort to create a comprehensive active and accessible transportation plan, Connect Lynnwood.

Through this work, Lynnwood is committing to increasing the percentage of residents living within a 10-minute walk to a park from 76% to 85% by 2030 by ensuring there are new parks developed in the city’s urban and densifying core and through policies in the Active & Accessible Transportation Plan that will prioritize increased multimodal connectivity to all neighborhood parks.

In 2020, the Urban Land Institute conducted a National Study Visit in Lynnwood to examine the role of parks and pedestrian connections in the emerging City Center neighborhood. The study visit brought a team of experts from around the nation to tour City Center, interview community members and businesses, and make recommendations which were published in a report in December 2020.
